What are the functions of plasticizers in coatings?

  1. Improve the flexibility and weather resistance of coatings.

Plasticizers change the molecular structure of the coating film and increase its flexibility, so that the coating can withstand greater deformation without cracking. This is especially important for exterior wall coatings and surface coatings that need to be frequently moved or deformed. At the same time, plasticizers can absorb part of the ultraviolet rays, reduce the direct damage of light to the coating film, and extend the service life of the coating. Suitable plasticizers can also improve the chemical resistance and water resistance of the coating by forming chemical bonds with the resin, so that it can be used in more severe environments.

2. Improve the film-forming properties of the coating.

Plasticizers can reduce the film-forming temperature required for the formation of the coating film, especially in low temperature environments. The addition of plasticizers can ensure the normal film formation of the coating. In addition, by selecting a plasticizer with appropriate compatibility, the internal stress of the coating film can be reduced, and cracking and blistering of the coating film can be avoided. Plasticizers can also improve the leveling and wettability of the coating to obtain a smoother and smoother coating surface.

3. Adjust the leveling of the paint

Leveling is an important indicator of whether the coating can form a flat surface after the paint is applied. Plasticizers can reduce the surface tension of the paint, promote the uniform distribution of the paint on the substrate, prevent brush marks and rolling marks, and obtain a smooth and flat coating. Especially when using spraying or rolling, good leveling can significantly improve the appearance quality of the coating.

4. Improve the construction performance of the paint

Plasticizers can effectively reduce the viscosity of the paint, improve its fluidity, make the paint easier to apply, and reduce the rolling and brush marks of the paint, thereby improving the construction efficiency. In addition, plasticizers can also improve the wettability of the paint, making it easier to evenly apply the paint on various substrates of different properties, and increase the adhesion and covering power of the paint.

5. Improve low temperature performance

In low temperature environments, the paint may become brittle and easy to crack. Plasticizers can reduce the glass transition temperature of the paint, that is, the temperature at which the paint changes from a brittle state to a tough state. This means that at lower temperatures, the coating can still maintain a certain degree of flexibility and toughness, reducing damage caused by temperature changes.

6. Increase gloss and transparency

Plasticizers can help optimize the surface properties of the coating film and provide better gloss and transparency. For transparent coatings or applications requiring high gloss effects, choosing the right plasticizer is particularly critical.
